-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 14 Date: 12/5/14 Title: Cloisonne Describe it in a few sentences. This is a pencil and colored pencil drawing of a cloisonne bead. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. There is value, so the bead becomes a form. Texture is shown in the twisted wire part of the bead. There are mostly organic shapes with a few more geometric shapes. Pattern and rhythm are shown in the wire. Emphasis is on the bead because it is the only colored thing on the page. Where and when did you do this? I did this at my house on thursday. What is the most original or creative part? I think the most original part is choosing to draw a bead. Why did you choose this particular theme? I had been making jewelry with cloisonne beads, I thought they would be fun to draw. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. I like the white reflection on the top of the bead the beast. It shows more of the curvature of the bead. My least favorite part is the leaf on the bottom. It isn’t dark enough, so it makes that part of the bead look less spherical. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 13 Date 11/24/14 Title: Space Describe it in a few sentences. This is a pencil drawing of planets. It was based off my desktop background. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. There is value making the planets forms. Texture is shown in the cloudy material in the back. Contrast is shown between the smaller planet and the background. Emphasis is on the small planet. It is darker, and is in an intersection using rule of thirds. The planets are geometric, but the rest of the shapes are more organic. Movement is shown with the clouds in the background. The balance is more asymmetrical. Where and when did you do this? I did this on sunday at my house. I was sick on thursday and friday so I wasn’t able to do it by then. What is the most original or creative part? I think a creative part was leaving the background lighter. It gives the effect of a different world, but you can still tell that the picture is in space. Why did you choose this particular theme? I needed and idea for a drawing, and I saw my desktop background. I decided to do a drawing similar to it. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. I like the small planet the best. It really looks spherical, while still having things such as continents on it. My least favorite part is the larger planet. The craters make it look less spherical. What else should we know about this piece. The more information you provide, the better! I like how instead of black space there is white space. It makes the drawing more interesting than just another galaxy print item. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 12 Date 11/7/14 Title ‘Instrument’ Describe it in a few sentences. This is a pencil drawing of an imaginary musical instrument. This instrument combines parts of the harp, electric cello, and guitar. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. There is value, so instrument becomes a form. The balance is more asymmetrical. There is pattern and rhythm shown with the strings of the instrument. Line is shown with the spiral of metal. Space is shown with some shading in the background. Contrast is shown between the strings and the neck of the instrument. Where and when did you do this? I did this on Wednesday and Thursday at my house. What is the most original or creative part? I think the most creative part is the idea of combining the different instruments. The spiral comes from the electric cello, the keys at the top come from a pedal harp, the shape of the instrument is more like an electric guitar. Why did you choose this particular theme? I didn’t need to do anymore observational drawings, so I wanted to make something up. I was going to an orchestra concert on Thursday, so I decided to make up an instrument. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. My favorite part are the knobs at the top of the instrument. They look more metallic. My least favorite part is the neck of the instrument. It doesn’t look like its above the body of the instrument. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 11 Date 10/31/14 Title ‘Ghost Pumpkin” Describe it in a few sentences. This is a pencil drawing of a pumpkin. The shadow is placed below the pumpkin to give the effect that it is floating. The background is made of purple pencil strokes. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. There is value, so the pumpkin becomes a form. The balance is asymmetrical. There is pattern and rhythm shown with the repeating grooves in the pumpkin. Line is shown with the pumpkin stem. Space is shown with darker purple ‘further away’ from the pumpkin.Emphasis is on the pumpkin because it doesn’t have color. It is also the most developed. Where and when did you do this? I did this on Thursday at my house. What is the most original or creative part? I think the most creative part is making the sky and ground purple. It gives a more eerie effect, but it doesn’t distract from the pumpkin. The lines in they actually lead my eye to the pumpkin. Why did you choose this particular theme? I wanted to do an observational drawing, and Friday this week was Halloween. I had mini pumpkins at my house. After I drew the pumpkin I thought it looked a little ghostlike. I decided to make the pumpkin a ghost. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. My favorite part is the background. I really like the way it shows space and draws your eye to the pumpkin. My least favorite part is the pumpkin stem. The shades aren’t quite right. It almost looks angled away from the viewer instead of straight up. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 10 Date 10/24/14 Title Bamboo Describe it in a few sentences. This is a graphite pencil and colored pencil drawing of bamboo in a pot. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. There is value, so the shape is a form. the bamboo shows texture, and the repetition of green shows unity. This drawing has more organic shapes. Laine is shown with the bamboo. Rhythm is shown with the grooves in the bamboo, and the similar shapes in the background. Where and when did you do this? I did this on thursday at my house. What is the most original or creative part? The most original or creative part is the background. The lines of color give the effect of a bamboo forest, but it isn’t there. Why did you choose this particular theme? I wanted to do an observational drawing. I saw my bamboo plant on the windowsill, and thought it would be fun to draw. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. My least favorite part is the brown/yellowed parts of the plant. They aren’t quite the right color. My favorite part is the background. It reminds me of having a memory of a bamboo forest. What else should we know about this piece. The more information you provide, the better! After I drew the outline the rest of the bamboo (shading) was all done with colored pencils- no eraser. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 9 Date 10/17/14 Title Floating Describe it in a few sentences. This is a graphite and colored pencil drawing. This was done with two point perspective. The drawing shows a floating building or city. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. There is value so the buildings/ rectangles become a form. The balance is more symmetrical. Line is shown with the edges of the buildings. Pattern and rhythm are shown with the repeating rectangles and geometric shapes. The lines in the sky show some movement, and the windows in the long skinny building on the left show pattern. Where and when did you do this? I did this on Tuesday at my house. What is the most original or creative part? The most original or creative part is making the lines of color in the sky more geometric. Normally you think of the sky as being organic, but this makes it more precise and almost artificial. Why did you choose this particular theme? I hadn’t done a point perspective drawing in a while, and I enjoy them a lot, so I decided to do a point perspective drawing. I made a floating city, and that seemed industrial and a bit futuristic to me. Because of this I decided to make the lines in the sky geometric, so the sky looked more man made. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. My favorite part are the colors of the building. It still looks man-made, but it’s not all dreary and sinister. My least favorite part is the grass. IT doesn’t look as artificial as I would like. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 8 Date 10/10/14 Title Nautilus Describe it in a few sentences. This is a pencil drawing of a chambered Nautilus shell. The page is tilted. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. There is value so the shell becomes a form. The balance is asymmetrical.Line is shown with the spiral of the shell. Pattern and rhythm are shown with the repeating darker areas on the shell. There is emphasis on the shell because it is more developed. The shape is both geometric and organic. The spiral of the shell moves your eye around the shell. Where and when did you do this? I did this on Monday at my house. What is the most original or creative part? The most original or creative part is that the drawing is aligned more diagonally on the paper. Why did you choose this particular theme? I wanted to do and observational drawing. I was looking around, and I saw the Nautilus shell, so I decided to draw it. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. I like the center of the spiral the best. It looks a bit sunken, a lot like the actual shell. My least favorite part is that the name date and title on the back show through. What else should we know about this piece. The more information you provide, the better! I purposely made the table, shadow and holder for the shell sketchier. I wanted this to emphasize the shell. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 7 Date 10/3/14 Title ‘Agate Slice’ Describe it in a few sentences. This is a pencil drawing of an agate slice. The agate is lying flat on the table. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. There is value, so the agate is a form. It is more symmetrically balanced, but the agate slice itself is asymmetrical. There is emphasis on the agate because it is the only thing on the page. There is contrast between the dark spots on the rock, and the lighter almost clear parts. The outline of the agite shows rhythm and repetition because of the grooves in the rock. Where and when did you do this? Thursday at my house. What is the most original or creative part? I think the most original part was just deciding to draw a rock. Normally I don’t think people would choose to draw a rock. Why did you choose this particular theme? I wanted to do an observational drawing, and I didn’t have as much time. I went into my room and found my collection of rocks. This one seemed more interesting so I drew it. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. I like the very bottom edge of the rock the best. It looks uneven. My least favorite part is that the agate doesn’t look as 3D. I think this is probably because there wasn’t a shadow on the table. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 6 Date 9/26/14 Title Pointe Shoe Describe it in a few sentences. This is a pencil drawing of pointe shoe. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. The ribbons show line, and the repeated light ares move your eye from place to place. There is value so the shoe becomes a form. Texture is shown on the elastic ankle strap. The balance is more asymmetrical, and there is emphasis on the shoe because its the only thing on the page. Where and when did you do this? I did this at my house on Wednesday and Thursday. What is the most original or creative part? I think the most original/ creative part is the angle i drew the shoe at. It was straight sideways, but you could just barely see the inside of the shoe. Why did you choose this particular theme? I wanted to do an observational drawing, and I had just had my first nutcracker rehearsals, so I decided to draw one of my pointe shoes. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. I like the highlight on the part of the shoe your toes are in. Its smoother, and shows that the shoe is actually more boxed shaped. My least favorite part is the face that I forgot to draw the shadows on the table except for a few on one of the ribbons. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 5 Date 9/19/14 Title Blue Sky Describe it in a few sentences. This is a monochromatic (purple) self portrait. The background is a teal blue with white brushstrokes. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. There is value, making my face a form. This painting has an asymmetric balance. Texture is shown in the hair and background. This has mostly organic shapes. Rhythm is shown in the background. The colors are closer on the color wheel, so that helps to show unity.Your eyes move along the white brushstrokes. Where and when did you do this? I did this on sunday at my house. I had to have a large block of time so my paint wouldn’t dry. What is the most original or creative part? I think the creative part is using cool colors, which tend to be more soothing, and not having a peaceful expression. Why did you choose this particular theme? I wanted to do a painting this time, and I didn’t know what to paint. I had myself, so i decided to take a picture of myself and do a self portrait. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. I like the contrast between the background and myself the best. There isn’t a part I don’t like. What else should we know about this piece. The more information you provide, the better! I may change the background in the future so it looks like its going behind me more. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 4 Date 9/12/14 Title “Masked” Describe it in a few sentences. This is a drawing of a girl with a half face mask.Only the mask is colored. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. There is value, so the face is a form. The hair shows texture and lines. There is pattern with the repeating colors on the mask. Emphasis is on the mask, because it is the only thing with color. The mask also contrasts with the rest of the drawing. The drawing is made up of mostly organic shapes. Your eye starts at the mask, and then moves to other parts of the drawing. Overlapping of things shows unity. Where and when did you do this? I did this at my house after school. What is the most original or creative part? I believe the mask is the most creative part. Why did you choose this particular theme? I was drawing the face, and one side was more developed than the other. The less developed side reminded me of a mask, so I decided to make a half face mask. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. My favorite part is the layering of colors on the mask, the colors look like they have more depth. My least favorite part is the hair. I didn’t have anything to base it off of, so it doesn't look quite right. What else should we know about this piece. The more information you provide, the better! The shading on the face is based off of how shadows fall on my face in previous self portraits. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 3 Date: 9/5/6 Title: “Fiber Optic” Describe it in a few sentences. This is a drawing of a fiber optic flower I got at a dance recital about 3 years ago. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. The flower is shaded so it has value and is a form. The drawing has an asymmetrical balance. The leaves and petals of the flower show texture because they have fiber optic tubes running through them. The line of the flower moves the eye along the flower. The pattern and rhythm are shown with repeating the pink dots/ areas through the flower. This drawing has a mix of geometric shapes and organic shapes. this drawing has a cool color scheme except for the pink dots. The drawing takes up space. The little areas of pink Tie all the parts of the flower together. Where and when did you do this? I did this after school at my house. What is the most original or creative part? The most creative part was deciding to use paint for the pink dot fiber optic lights. Why did you choose this particular theme? I was trying to think of what to draw and I looked over onto my shelf and saw a vase with my fiber optic flowers in it. I thought it would be fun to draw because normally flowers are more organically shaped, but the fiber optic flowers looked more geometric. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. I like the shadow under the flower the best, it gives the effect that the flower isn’t always touching the ground. My least favorite part is the fiber optic dots. I couldn’t get the color right. The dots never looked like they were glowing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 2 Date 8/29/14 Title “Volcanic Glass” Describe it in a few sentences. This is a drawing of a geyser and hot spring that I have turned into a stained glass picture. It is based on a picture of a geyser from Yellowstone National Park. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. I used value in the geyser’s steam, and on the base of the geyser. The drawing has an asymmetrical balance. I used texture on the the forest and rocks making up the geyser. Lines are used to give the effect of a stained glass window. The stained glass pieces create a pattern. There is emphasis on the geyser because it is the only thing without color. This drawing has almost all organic shapes. The clarity of the trees in the forest gives the effect that the hills are increasing in distance. The main contrast is the black lines to the rest of the colored drawing. I used the colors based off of what the colors of the hot spring in the picture were. Space is shown in between the black lines. The eye is originally drawn to a spot on the drawing, the black lines than cause your eye to move across the drawing. I repeated organic shapes, and unity is shown through the connecting black lines. Where and when did you do this? I worked on this at my house after school. What is the most original or creative part? I believe the most original or creative part is my decision to turn the drawing into a stained glass picture. Why did you choose this particular theme? I chose this theme because I am interested in volcanoes and volcanic activity. Geysers and hot springs fall under this category, but they are especially interesting to look at. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. I like all the different colors the best. I had to layer different colors to get the right hues. My least favorite part is the fumarole below the geyser. I don’t think it looks quite right. What else should we know about this piece. The more information you provide, the better! I spent all week working on this piece. I had to stay up working on it thursday night. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Week 1 Date: 8/22/14 Title: “Junonia” Describe it in a few sentences. The drawing is of a Junonia seashell surrounded by teal cabochon cut stones. The shell and stones are on top of a paper colored to look like a beach, that is burning away. How did you use the elements and principles of art? Explain where you include them. The stones and Junonia have value and form. The space is showed by the values created by shading. The water has pattern, texture, movement, and rhythm. Most of the drawing is colored, except for where the paper is burnt away. At first glance the drawing looks more symmetrically balanced, but when you look closer you can see that it is actually asymmetric. There is less contrast, but some is included on the shell. The shell is almost white, but has dark spots. There is emphasis on the cut stones, because their color is more intense than the color on the rest of the drawing. Unity is shown with the ocean theme and colors. Where and when did you do this? I worked on this drawing at my house almost every day this week. What is the most original or creative part? I believe the most original or creative part is my decision to make the water and sand turn out to be drawn on a piece of paper. Instead of actually sitting on the beach the Junonia is on a picture that is burning away. Why did you choose this particular theme? I had brought my junonia shell downstairs, so I saw it sitting on the counter. I knew we needed to do 8 drawings based on observations, so I decided to draw my junonia for one of my observations. After that I thought about how I could make the background more interesting than just a beach. At first I was thinking of water droplets on the paper, but they reminded me of cabochon cut gemstones. I like gemstones, rocks, and minerals a lot so I decided to draw cabochon cut gemstones instead. What do you like best and what do you like least? Why. My favorite part is probably the burnt edges. I had to actually go outside and burn the edges of a piece of paper to find out the right colors and shapes to use to make the burnt edges look more realistic. My least favorite part would have to be the cabochon cut stones. I was trying to have them not look like spheres, but everyone who saw them thought they were spheres. What else should we know about this piece. The more information you provide, the better! At first I didn’t understand what had to be included in the meaning of the drawing. I thought it had to be really deep, but I was already half-way through my drawing. I looked at it and decided that if I made the water and sand on a burning piece of paper, the drawing could represent how natural resources are being used up, and how nothing, not even the bottom of the ocean is untouched by humans. |
